Day 1

Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to Uganda

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional guide and transferred to your guest house. After check-in, you can take time to relax and recover from your journey.

If time allows, you may enjoy light birding around Entebbe. The nearby botanical gardens and lakeshore areas are excellent for spotting species such as weaver birds, hornbills, and African fish eagles. You may also opt for a short visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center or a peaceful walk along the shores of Lake Victoria.

This gentle introduction gives you your first taste of Uganda’s rich birdlife and sets the stage for the exciting days ahead.

Day 2

Mabamba Swamp – Shoebill Tracking Experience

After an early breakfast, you’ll head to Mabamba Swamp, one of the best places in Africa to see the elusive Shoebill in the wild.

You’ll explore the wetland by traditional canoe, gliding quietly through narrow papyrus channels. Your expert local guide will help you identify bird calls and movement as you search for the Shoebill, often seen standing motionless in shallow waters while hunting lungfish.

Beyond the Shoebill, Mabamba offers incredible bird diversity. Expect to see African Jacanas walking gracefully on floating vegetation, Blue-breasted Bee-eaters perched along the swamp edges, and various herons, egrets, and kingfishers. The peaceful environment and slow pace make this a truly rewarding birding experience.

After several hours on the water, return to Entebbe with optional roadside birding stops along the way.

Day 3

Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park – Scenic Birding Journey

After breakfast, begin your journey southwest to Lake Mburo National Park. The drive takes approximately 5–6 hours and offers a constantly changing landscape—from urban centers to rural farmland and rolling hills.

Along the way, you’ll make several birding stops at wetlands such as Kaku Swamp, where you may spot Grey Crowned Cranes, lapwings, and herons. You’ll also pass through local villages and farmlands, offering insight into daily life in Uganda.

Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening. You can explore the surroundings on foot or enjoy light birding around the lodge, where acacia trees attract species like woodpeckers, bee-eaters, and lovebirds.

Day 4

Birding Game Drive & Boat Safari in Lake Mburo

Start your day early with a guided birding game drive through the park’s acacia woodlands and open savannah.

Lake Mburo is unique among Uganda’s parks, offering sightings of species not commonly found elsewhere, including Red-faced Barbet and Bare-faced Go-away-birds. Wildlife encounters may include zebras, impalas, giraffes, and buffaloes grazing in the morning light.

After lunch, head out for a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Mburo. This provides a completely different perspective, allowing you to observe hippos wallowing in the water, crocodiles sunbathing on the banks, and a wide variety of aquatic birds. After an early breakfast, you’ll begin your transfer to the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with a rewarding birding experience along the famous “Neck”—a narrow forest corridor that connects different sections of the park.

This stretch is one of the most productive birding areas in Bwindi, offering a mix of habitats that attract both highland and lowland species. As you move slowly through the area, your expert birding guide will help you identify calls, movements, and subtle signs in the forest canopy. Expect to search for species such as the Black Bee-eater, Dusky Crimsonwing, and various forest warblers, along with other Albertine Rift endemics.

Birding on the Buhoma Forest Trails – Bwindi Rainforest Experience

Today is dedicated to a full-day birding experience in the Buhoma sector, one of the most rewarding rainforest birding destinations in East Africa.

After breakfast, head out with your guide to explore the well-established forest trails. The dense vegetation, towering trees, and thick undergrowth create a rich ecosystem where birds thrive at every level—from the forest floor to the high canopy.

As you walk quietly through the forest, you’ll listen for distinctive calls and scan the trees for movement. Target species include the African Broadbill, Bar-tailed Trogon, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, and numerous sunbirds, greenbuls, and turacos. The diversity here is exceptional, making it a highlight for both beginner and experienced birders.

After breakfast, depart Bwindi and begin your scenic journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most popular wildlife safari destination.

The drive takes you through rolling hills, forest edges, and rural landscapes before entering the Ishasha sector—famous for its unique population of tree-climbing lions. As you pass through this region, keep your eyes on the fig trees where lions are often seen resting on branches, especially during the heat of the day.

Along the way, you’ll continue birding, with chances to spot savannah species, raptors, and wetland birds depending on the terrain.

Day 10

Morning Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Boat Safari

Start your day early with a game drive in the Kasenyi Plains, one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

As the sun rises over the savannah, the park comes alive with activity. You’ll search for predators such as lions and hyenas, often spotted returning from night hunts, as well as large herds of Uganda kob, buffaloes, and elephants grazing in the golden light. The open plains make wildlife viewing particularly rewarding, and your guide will help track movement and identify species.

Birdwatching is equally impressive, with sightings of bustards, eagles, vultures, and various savannah specialists.

After lunch at the lodge, head out for one of the highlights of this wildlife safari—a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway, connecting Lake Edward and Lake George, attracts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

From the boat, you’ll observe hippos in large pods, crocodiles basking on the banks, and elephants and buffaloes coming down to drink. The birdlife here is outstanding, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, and cormorants.

After your birding experience, begin the scenic transfer to Kibale Forest National Park, passing through the stunning crater lake region and lush tea plantations around Fort Portal. The journey offers plenty of photo opportunities and occasional birding stops.

With over 370 bird species recorded, Kibale offers excellent opportunities to spot forest specialists, including greenbuls, flycatchers, and woodland warblers. The dense forest canopy and rich ecosystem make every walk unique and rewarding.

In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run conservation area known for its incredible biodiversity. The guided walk here takes you through papyrus swamps and woodland habitats, where you may see additional bird species, monkeys, and butterflies.

Arrive in Entebbe in the late afternoon and check in at your guest house. Spend the evening relaxing and reflecting on your incredible birding and wildlife safari across Uganda.

Departure – End of Your Uganda Safari

Your guide will assist with your airport transfer, marking the end of your unforgettable Uganda birding and wildlife safari, filled with diverse ecosystems, rare species, and incredible natural experiences.
