Tour Plan
Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins with a warm welcome from your professional driver-guide upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing, you will embark on a guided Kigali city tour, offering a meaningful introduction to Rwanda’s history, culture, and remarkable transformation.
During the city tour, you will visit key landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a powerful and educational site that honors the victims of the 1994 genocide and highlights Rwanda’s journey toward unity and resilience. You may also explore local craft markets and cultural centers, where you can interact with artisans and discover handmade souvenirs.
After lunch in Kigali, begin your scenic drive north toward Volcanoes National Park. The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is characterized by rolling hills, terraced farmland, and picturesque rural villages. As you ascend into the Virunga region, the landscape becomes cooler and more dramatic, with views of volcanic peaks rising above the forest canopy.
Upon arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and take time to relax. The peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air provide the perfect setting to unwind before your gorilla trekking experience.
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – The Ultimate Primate Experience
Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi by around 7:00 AM for registration and a comprehensive briefing by park rangers. During this session, you will learn about gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and trekking guidelines.
You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families and grouped with a small number of trekkers (maximum of 8 participants). Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forest.
The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain is mountainous and can be steep or muddy, but the experience is well-paced and supported by expert guides. Along the way, you will enjoy the beauty of the forest, including bamboo zones, dense vegetation, and occasional wildlife sightings.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as silverbacks display their strength, juveniles play energetically, and mothers nurture their young. This close interaction is both humbling and deeply emotional—an experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
After the trek, return to the park headquarters where you will receive your Gorilla Trekking Certificate. You will then head back to your lodge for relaxation, lunch, and reflection on this incredible experience.
Optional activities in the afternoon may include a visit to the Dian Fossey Research Center or a cultural experience in the nearby communities.
Return to Kigali – Scenic Departure
After a relaxed breakfast, you will begin your return journey to Kigali. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and offers another opportunity to enjoy Rwanda’s scenic countryside, with its rolling hills and vibrant rural life.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for a brief stop in Kigali for shopping or a short visit to local markets. Your guide will ensure a timely transfer to Kigali International Airport or your hotel.
As your safari concludes, you will leave with unforgettable memories of your gorilla trekking experience and a deeper appreciation for Rwanda’s natural beauty and conservation success.
