Tour Plan
Transfer from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport. After a short briefing, you will set off on a scenic drive toward southwestern Uganda.
The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, crossing into Uganda via Cyanika (near Kisoro) or Katuna (near Kabale), depending on your allocated gorilla trekking sector—often Rushaga, known for its accessibility and variety of gorilla families.
As you travel, enjoy panoramic views of Rwanda’s rolling hills before entering Uganda’s Kigezi Highlands, where terraced slopes and misty valleys create a dramatic landscape.
Arrive at your lodge around midday or early afternoon, check in, and enjoy lunch.
Afternoon (Optional Activities):
You may take a guided Batwa cultural experience or a short forest-edge nature walk to explore the biodiversity of the area.
Evening:
Relax at the lodge, enjoy dinner, and prepare for your first gorilla trekking experience.
First Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for a briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family in a small group of up to 8 visitors and begin your gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi with experienced guides and trackers.
The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The forest terrain is dense and can be steep in sections, but the trek is guided and paced to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour observing them at close range. Watch as they feed, groom, rest, and interact within their family group. Seeing a silverback up close or young gorillas playing is a truly moving wildlife experience.
After the trek, return to the park headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate, then transfer back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Evening:
Enjoy a quiet evening at the lodge, reflecting on your first encounter.
Second Gorilla Trek or Gorilla Habituation Experience
Today offers you the chance to deepen your gorilla trekking safari experience with a second forest adventure.
Option 1: Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, return to the park headquarters for another briefing before setting out to track a different gorilla family. This second trek provides a new perspective, allowing you to explore a different part of the forest and observe varied gorilla behaviors.
As with the first trek, the hike may take 2 to 6 hours, followed by one hour with the gorillas, giving you more time to appreciate their social structure and natural interactions.
Option 2: Gorilla Habituation Experience (Highly Recommended)
Alternatively, upgrade to the gorilla habituation experience, where you will spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group. This experience is more immersive and is conducted alongside researchers and trackers.
You will gain deeper insight into gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and the process of habituation—making it ideal for photographers and those seeking a more in-depth wildlife encounter.
Afternoon & Evening:
Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. You may also opt for a cultural or nature walk if you choose not to trek.
Return to Kigali – End of Safari
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin your return journey to Kigali.
The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, offering one final chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of southwestern Uganda and northern Rwanda. You will cross the border and continue through Rwanda’s rolling hills.
Depending on your schedule, you may stop for a short city visit, local craft shopping, or lunch in Kigali.
Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, where your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your onward travel.
