By starting and ending in Kigali, this itinerary minimizes travel time while maximizing your experience, making it one of the most efficient ways to enjoy gorilla trekking in Uganda. Along the way, you’ll pass through scenic highlands, vibrant rural communities and dense rainforest landscapes, culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with endangered mountain gorillas.
Tour Plan
Transfer from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport. After a short briefing from your professional driver-guide, you’ll set off on a scenic drive toward southwestern Uganda.
The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, making this one of the most convenient gorilla trekking routes in East Africa. You will cross into Uganda via either the Cyanika border (near Kisoro) or the Katuna border (near Kabale), depending on your allocated gorilla trekking sector.
As you travel, enjoy breathtaking views of Rwanda’s rolling hills before descending into the lush Kigezi Highlands of Uganda—often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its terraced hills and misty valleys.
Upon arrival in Bwindi around midday, check in at your lodge and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch. The lodges are typically set on hillsides overlooking the forest, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.
Afternoon (Optional Activities):
If time and energy allow, you may take part in an optional Batwa cultural experience, where you’ll learn about one of the region’s oldest indigenous communities, or enjoy a guided nature walk along the forest edge to discover local flora, birds, and smaller primates.
Evening:
Return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation. The cool forest air, sounds of nature, and anticipation of the next day’s trek make for a memorable evening.

Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Early Morning:
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters by 7:00 AM for a detailed briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. During the briefing, you’ll learn about gorilla behavior, trekking guidelines, and safety protocols.
You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family in a small group of up to 8 visitors, ensuring a personalized and respectful wildlife experience.
Trekking Experience:
The trek into the forest can take anywhere between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Bwindi’s terrain is dense and sometimes steep, but the experience is fully guided and paced to match your comfort level.
As you hike through the forest, your guide will point out unique plant species, birdlife, and possibly other primates such as colobus monkeys.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour in their presence. Watch as they feed on leaves, groom one another, play, and interact within their family groups. This close encounter is deeply moving and widely regarded as one of the most powerful wildlife experiences in the world.
After the Trek:
