Tour Plan
Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Akagera National Park
Your safari begins with a warm welcome from your professional guide at Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing, you will set off on a guided city tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most vibrant capitals.
The tour includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you will gain a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history and remarkable journey of recovery. You may also explore local markets and craft centers, offering insight into everyday life and the country’s rich culture.
After lunch in Kigali, begin your journey east toward Akagera National Park. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and passes through scenic countryside, with rolling hills gradually giving way to open savannah landscapes.
Upon arrival at the park, you will check in at your lodge and take some time to relax. Later in the afternoon, head out for your first game drive. This introductory safari offers a chance to spot wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and antelopes, while enjoying the park’s diverse habitats.
Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.
Full-Day Game Drive & Boat Safari on Lake Lake Ihema
Begin your day early with a sunrise game drive, the best time to observe wildlife at its most active. Akagera National Park is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—along with a wide range of other species including zebras, impalas, giraffes, warthogs, and hyenas.
Your guide will navigate through different parts of the park, from open savannah plains to woodland areas, increasing your chances of diverse wildlife sightings. The morning light also provides excellent conditions for photography.
After the morning drive, return to the lodge for a late breakfast or brunch and some time to relax. You may choose to enjoy the lodge facilities or take in the surrounding views.
In the afternoon, head out for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, the second-largest lake in Rwanda and one of the highlights of Akagera. This peaceful cruise offers close-up views of hippos and Nile crocodiles, as well as an impressive variety of bird species such as herons, kingfishers, and African fish eagles.
As the sun sets over the lake, return to your lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening.
Morning Game Drive & Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, you may embark on a final short game drive, giving you one last opportunity to spot wildlife you may have missed on the previous day. Early morning drives often provide excellent sightings of predators before they retreat from the heat.
After exiting the park, begin your return journey to Kigali. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and offers scenic views of Rwanda’s countryside.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you may enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or visit craft markets for last-minute souvenirs. Depending on your flight schedule, you may also revisit key attractions or simply relax before your departure.
Your guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 3-day wildlife safari in Rwanda.
