Tour Plan
Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide. After a short briefing about your gorilla trekking safari, you will begin your journey north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The drive from Kigali to the park takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is one of the most scenic routes in East Africa. As you leave the capital, the landscape gradually transforms into a series of lush green hills, terraced farmland, and picturesque rural villages. The smooth roads and ever-changing views make the journey both comfortable and visually rewarding.
You will arrive in Musanze (Ruhengeri), the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park, in the early to mid-afternoon. After check-in at your lodge, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.
If time allows, you may opt for a cultural experience at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can learn about traditional Rwandan life, music, and dance. Alternatively, a guided community walk offers insight into local livelihoods and daily life in the region.
As evening falls, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner at your lodge while taking in views of the Virunga Volcanoes.
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Return to Kigali
Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for registration and a detailed briefing by park rangers. During the briefing, you will learn about gorilla behavior, trekking guidelines, and conservation efforts.
You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families and grouped with a small number of trekkers (maximum 8 people). Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forest.
The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain is mountainous and can be muddy, but the experience is well guided and paced to suit your group’s ability. Along the way, you may encounter other wildlife and enjoy the rich biodiversity of the park.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as silverbacks assert their presence, juveniles play energetically, and mothers care for their young. This close encounter is both humbling and deeply emotional—one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch or enjoy a packed lunch depending on your return time. You will then begin your drive back to Kigali.
If your schedule allows, you may take a short city tour, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which provides a powerful and educational insight into Rwanda’s history and resilience.
Finally, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 2 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari.
