3 Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking Safari
3 Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking Safari
Overview
The 3 Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking Safari is a perfect short adventure for travelers seeking a more intimate and less crowded gorilla trekking experience in Uganda. Set in the breathtaking landscapes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, this safari takes you to one of the most scenic and unique gorilla habitats in Africa—where mist-covered volcanoes, bamboo forests and rich biodiversity come together.
Located at the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mgahinga forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area. This remarkable region is home to endangered mountain gorillas, as well as golden monkeys and a variety of bird species. Compared to other gorilla trekking destinations, Mgahinga offers a quieter and more exclusive experience, making it ideal for nature lovers, photographers and travelers looking for a peaceful wildlife safari.
Tour Plan
Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe, or directly from Entebbe International Airport if you are arriving that day. After a short briefing, you will begin your journey to southwestern Uganda, heading toward Kisoro District where Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located.
You have two travel options depending on your preference:
By Road:
Enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 9 to 10 hours through Uganda’s diverse countryside. Along the way, you will pass through rolling hills, banana plantations, rural towns, and expansive farmlands. A stop at the Equator in Kayabwe offers a great opportunity for photos and a short break. Lunch is typically arranged en route in Mbarara, before continuing into the dramatic highlands of southwestern Uganda.
By Air:
Alternatively, you can take a scheduled domestic flight from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, which takes about 1.5 hours. Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred by road to your lodge near the park—a short but scenic drive through the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes.
Whichever option you choose, the journey introduces you to Uganda’s rich landscapes and sets the tone for your gorilla trekking experience.
Upon arrival, check in at your lodge, relax, and enjoy dinner with views of the surrounding mountains.
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in the stunning landscapes of Mgahinga.
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing by rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You will learn about trekking guidelines, safety measures, and conservation efforts before being assigned to a small group.
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forest. The terrain in Mgahinga is diverse, ranging from bamboo zones to montane forest, often set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes. The trek can take anywhere between 2 to 8 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching them feed, groom, and interact offers a rare and powerful connection with these gentle giants. The experience is both humbling and deeply rewarding.
After the trek, you will return to the park headquarters where you will receive your Gorilla Trekking Certificate as a keepsake of your experience.
In the afternoon, return to your lodge for relaxation. Optional activities such as guided nature walks or cultural visits can be arranged depending on your interest and energy levels.
