3 Day Gorilla Trekking in DR. Congo

Overview

This 3 Day Gorilla Trekking in DR. Congo is a short yet incredibly rewarding safari that takes you into the heart of Virunga National Park—Africa’s oldest national park and one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the continent. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and rich rainforest ecosystems, Virunga offers a rare opportunity to experience gorilla trekking in Congo, away from the crowds and in a truly wild setting.

Starting and ending in Kigali, this safari is ideal for travelers with limited time who still want a powerful wildlife encounter. The journey combines scenic drives through Rwanda’s rolling hills, a cross-border adventure into the Democratic Republic of Congo and the unforgettable experience of tracking endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Transfer from Kigali to Virunga National Park (Bukima Sector)

Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport. After a short briefing, you will set off on a scenic drive toward the Rwanda–Congo border, a journey of approximately 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic and border formalities.

As you travel northwest, enjoy views of Rwanda’s lush countryside, rolling hills, and vibrant local communities. Upon reaching the Grande Barrière border post in Goma, you will complete immigration procedures before crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

After crossing, continue a short distance into Goma town where you will stop for lunch. From here, the journey continues to the Bukima sector of Virunga National Park (approximately 1–2 hours), the main starting point for gorilla trekking in Congo.

Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in, and take time to relax while surrounded by forested hills and volcanic scenery. The peaceful setting offers a perfect opportunity to unwind and prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bukima ranger post for your gorilla trekking briefing, typically starting around 7:00–8:00 AM. During this session, park rangers will explain trekking guidelines, safety rules, and conservation efforts, ensuring you are well prepared for the experience.

You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin your guided trek into the dense rainforest of Virunga, accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers.

The gorilla trekking experience in Congo can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain varies from gentle forest trails to steeper and more rugged sections, but the trek is paced comfortably with breaks along the way.

As you move through the forest, you may encounter other wildlife, hear bird calls, and observe the rich biodiversity that makes Virunga so unique.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour in their presence, observing them at close range as they feed, groom, and interact naturally. Watching a silverback lead the group or seeing young gorillas play in the forest is a deeply moving and unforgettable wildlife experience.

After your time with the gorillas, you will trek back to the starting point where your driver will transfer you back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. The afternoon is free for you to rest and reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
