Day 1

Transfer from Kigali & Hike to the Summit of Mount Nyiragongo

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Kigali or Gisenyi. You will then drive toward the Grande Barrière border post, crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

After immigration formalities, continue to the headquarters of Virunga National Park in Goma, where you will meet your park rangers and receive a detailed briefing about the hike, safety procedures, and what to expect along the trail.

At approximately 10:30 AM, you will transfer to the Kibati starting point, where your Nyiragongo volcano hike begins. The ascent takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level.

The hike is moderately challenging, with steep sections and changing terrain. As you ascend, you will pass through different vegetation zones—from tropical forest at the base to more open volcanic terrain higher up. Along the way, your guide will point out unique plant life and explain the geological features of the volcano.

You will hike at a steady pace with scheduled rest stops, allowing time to catch your breath and take in the surroundings. The final stretch becomes steeper and more rugged, but the reward at the top is extraordinary.

Upon reaching the summit, you will be welcomed by one of the most breathtaking natural sights in the world—the Nyiragongo lava lake, glowing deep within the crater. Day 2

Sunrise at the Crater, Descent & Return to Kigali

Wake up early to witness a spectacular sunrise over the volcano, with views stretching across the surrounding landscapes of Congo and neighboring Rwanda. The morning light offers a different perspective of the lava lake, making it a perfect time for photography.

After breakfast at the summit, begin your descent back to Kibati. The hike down typically takes 3 to 4 hours and is easier than the ascent, though still requires careful footing on the volcanic terrain.

Upon reaching the base, you will transfer back to Goma town. If time allows, you may enjoy a brief orientation of Goma, including views of the lava flow from previous eruptions and local surroundings.

You will then proceed to the border, cross back into Rwanda, and continue your return journey to Kigali (approximately 4 to 5 hours total travel time depending on border crossing conditions).

Arrive in Kigali in the late afternoon or evening, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport, marking the end of your incredible Nyiragongo Volcano hiking adventure.
