Day 1

Arrival in Kigali, City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your safari begins with a warm welcome from your professional guide upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel. After a short briefing, you will set out on a guided Kigali city tour, offering an insightful introduction to Rwanda’s history, culture, and transformation.

The tour includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you will learn about Rwanda’s past and its inspiring journey toward unity and recovery. You may also explore local craft markets and cultural centers, where you can interact with artisans and discover handmade souvenirs.

After lunch in Kigali, begin your scenic drive north to Volcanoes National Park, a journey of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The road winds through Rwanda’s signature rolling hills, terraced farms, and rural villages, offering a picturesque and relaxing drive.

Upon arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and enjoy the cool mountain atmosphere. Spend the evening at leisure, followed by dinner as you prepare for your gorilla trekking experience the next day.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for your gorilla trekking briefing. Park rangers will explain the trekking guidelines, safety measures, and conservation efforts before assigning you to a specific gorilla family.

Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains. The trek can take between 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, with terrain ranging from gentle slopes to steeper, forested paths.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching silverbacks guard their families, juveniles play, and mothers care for their young is a deeply moving and unforgettable wildlife experience.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and a short rest before beginning your transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda. The drive takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and passes through scenic countryside, tea plantations, and rolling hills.

Day 3

Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today is dedicated to exploring the rich biodiversity of Nyungwe Forest through chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walk experience.

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before setting out into the forest in search of chimpanzees. Nyungwe is home to a large population of chimpanzees as well as over 13 other primate species.

The trek involves hiking through dense rainforest while listening for the chimps’ distinctive calls. Once located, you will observe them as they move through the trees, feed, and interact in their social groups. Their energetic and vocal behavior makes for an exciting and dynamic wildlife encounter.

In the afternoon, enjoy one of Nyungwe’s most unique attractions—the canopy walk. Suspended approximately 50–60 meters above the forest floor, this walkway offers panoramic views of the treetops, misty hills, and surrounding rainforest. It is an excellent way to appreciate the scale and beauty of one of Africa’s oldest forests.

Day 4

Return to Kigali & Departure

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Kigali, a drive of approximately 5 to 6 hours. The route takes you through Rwanda’s scenic countryside, with views of tea plantations, hills, and rural communities.

A lunch stop will be made along the way. Depending on your flight schedule, you may revisit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or explore local markets for last-minute shopping.

Your guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 4 Day Rwanda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari.
