Tour Plan
Transfer from Kigali to Bukima – Gateway to Gorilla Trekking
Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport. After a short briefing, you’ll set off on a scenic drive toward the Rwanda–Congo border near Goma, a journey of approximately 4 to 5 hours.
Along the way, enjoy views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, vibrant villages, and glimpses of Lake Kivu. After completing border formalities, continue into the Democratic Republic of Congo and drive to the Bukima sector—one of the main starting points for gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park (about 1–2 hours from Goma).
Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in, and relax in the tranquil forest surroundings. This is a great time to unwind and prepare for your gorilla trekking experience the following day.
Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park & Transfer to Goma
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bukima ranger station for a detailed gorilla trekking briefing, usually starting around 7:00–8:00 AM. You will learn about trekking guidelines, safety procedures, and gorilla conservation before being assigned to a habituated gorilla family.
Your gorilla trekking adventure in Congo begins as you hike into the dense rainforest with experienced rangers and trackers. The trek can take between 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas and the terrain.
As you move through the forest, your guide will share insights about the ecosystem and help you spot signs of wildlife along the way. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour in their presence, observing them as they feed, groom, and interact naturally. Watching a silverback lead the group or young gorillas play is a powerful and unforgettable experience.
After the trek, return to the starting point and transfer to Goma town (approximately 1 to 2 hours). Check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Nyiragongo Volcano Hike – Summit & Overnight at the Crater
After breakfast, transfer to Kibati (about 30–45 minutes), the starting point for your Nyiragongo volcano hike. After a safety briefing from Virunga Park rangers, begin your ascent up Mount Nyiragongo.
The hike to the summit takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on your pace. The trail passes through different vegetation zones—from tropical forest at the base to rugged volcanic rock higher up. The terrain becomes steeper as you ascend, but the hike is guided and paced with rest stops along the way.
Upon reaching the summit at 3,470 meters (11,380 feet), you will be rewarded with one of the most dramatic natural sights in the world—the active lava lake glowing inside the crater. As darkness falls, the molten lava becomes even more visible, creating a truly surreal and unforgettable experience.
You will spend the night in simple but secure crater rim cabins, enjoying dinner and the unique opportunity to sleep on top of an active volcano.
Descend Nyiragongo & Return to Kigali
Wake up early to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over the Virunga landscape, with views stretching across Congo and into Rwanda. After breakfast, begin your descent back to Kibati, which typically takes 3 to 4 hours.
Upon reaching the base, transfer back to Goma. If time allows, you may take a short city orientation, including views of past lava flows or local markets.
You will then proceed to the border, complete exit formalities, and re-enter Rwanda before continuing your journey back to Kigali (approximately 4 to 5 hours total travel time).
Arrive in Kigali in the late afternoon or evening, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your incredible Congo safari.
