5 Day Uganda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

Overview

This 5 Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Safari offers an exceptional opportunity to experience two of Africa’s most remarkable primates in their natural habitats. Combining gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, this safari delivers a rich and immersive wildlife experience across some of Uganda’s most beautiful landscapes.

Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, the journey takes you through lush rainforests, scenic highlands and vibrant rural communities. From the quiet, misty forests of Bwindi—home to endangered mountain gorillas—to the lively primate-filled ecosystem of Kibale, often referred to as the “Primate Capital of the World,” this itinerary offers a balanced mix of adventure, conservation and cultural discovery. Starting and ending in Entebbe or Kampala, the safari is fully inclusive of accommodation, permits, transportation, meals and professional guiding.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe, or directly from Entebbe International Airport. After a brief introduction, you will set off on a scenic drive to southwestern Uganda, heading toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The journey takes approximately 8 to 9 hours and offers a rewarding introduction to Uganda’s countryside. You will pass through rolling hills, banana plantations, and lively trading centers, with a memorable stop at the Equator in Kayabwe for photos and a short break. Lunch is typically arranged en route in Mbarara.

As you continue toward the Kigezi Highlands, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with terraced hillsides and mist-covered valleys creating a stunning backdrop. Arrival at your lodge is expected in the late afternoon or early evening, where you will check in, relax, and enjoy dinner.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today is dedicated to the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s dense rainforest.

After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing by rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You will then be assigned to a small group (maximum of 8 trekkers) and allocated a specific gorilla family to track.

The trek into the forest can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ movements. Guided by experienced trackers, you will navigate through thick vegetation and varying terrain while learning about the forest ecosystem.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching their interactions—from feeding and grooming to playful behavior among the younger members—is both humbling and deeply memorable.

After the trek, return to the lodge to relax and reflect on your experience. You will also receive a gorilla trekking certificate as a keepsake.

Day 3

Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park via Scenic Western Uganda

After breakfast, you will depart Bwindi and begin your journey north toward Kibale Forest National Park, a drive that takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Depending on the route, you may pass through sections of Queen Elizabeth National Park, offering optional opportunities for brief wildlife sightings or a stop at the Katwe Salt Lakes to learn about traditional salt mining practices.

In the afternoon, you will arrive in the Kibale region and head out for a guided walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This community-managed conservation area is rich in biodiversity, with sightings of monkeys, colorful bird species, and unique wetland vegetation.

After the walk, transfer to your lodge, check in, and enjoy dinner in a tranquil forest setting.

Day 4

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest National Park

Today offers another exciting primate experience—chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest.

After an early breakfast, you will head to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking guidelines. Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will enter the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities.

Kibale is home to a large population of chimpanzees as well as 12 other primate species, including red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The forest is alive with activity, and you will often hear the chimpanzees before you see them—calling to each other from the treetops.

Once located, you will spend time observing their behavior as they feed, groom, and move through the forest. This experience complements gorilla trekking perfectly, offering a different but equally fascinating perspective on primate life.

The afternoon can be spent relaxing at the lodge or enjoying an optional second nature walk in the area.
