4 Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Safari in DR Congo

4 Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Safari in DR Congo

Overview

This 4 Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Safari in DR Congo is a rare and exciting primate adventure that takes you deep into Virunga National Park—Africa’s oldest national park and one of its most biologically diverse landscapes. Uniquely, Virunga is one of the few places in the world where you can experience both mountain gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking within the same protected area.

Designed for adventurous travelers and wildlife enthusiasts, this safari combines close encounters with two of our closest relatives in the wild, set against a backdrop of dense rainforest, volcanic mountains and dramatic scenery. Starting and ending in Kigali, the itinerary is compact, well-paced and packed with unforgettable experiences.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Transfer from Kigali to Virunga National Park (Bukima Sector)

Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport, followed by a short safari briefing from your driver-guide. You will then set off on a scenic drive toward the Rwanda–Congo border near Goma, a journey of approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Along the way, enjoy views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, rural communities, and glimpses of Lake Kivu. Upon arrival at the border, complete immigration formalities before crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

After entering Congo, continue to Goma town for a lunch stop, then proceed to the Bukima sector of Virunga National Park (about 1 to 2 hours). This area is the main base for gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park.

Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in, and take time to relax in the peaceful forest setting as you prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 2

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bukima ranger station for a detailed gorilla trekking briefing, usually starting around 7:00–8:00 AM. During the briefing, rangers will explain trekking guidelines, safety rules, and conservation efforts.

You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin your gorilla trekking experience in Congo, accompanied by experienced trackers and armed rangers.

The trek can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain varies from gentle forest trails to steeper and more rugged sections, but the pace is manageable and guided throughout.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour in their presence, observing them at close range as they feed, groom, and interact. Watching a silverback lead his group or young gorillas play is a powerful and unforgettable wildlife experience.

After the trek, return to the starting point and transfer back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure, enjoying the natural surroundings.

Day 3

Chimpanzee Tracking or Habituation in Virunga National Park

After breakfast, head out for another exciting primate experience—chimpanzee tracking in Virunga National Park. Begin with a briefing at the park headquarters before setting off into the forest with your guide.

If you choose chimpanzee trekking, the hike typically takes 1 to 3 hours as you follow the calls of chimpanzees through the forest. Once located, you will spend one hour observing them, watching their energetic movements, social interactions, and feeding behavior.

Alternatively, you may opt for the chimpanzee habituation experience, a more immersive full-day activity where you join researchers and trackers as they follow chimpanzees from morning to evening. This option offers deeper insight into chimpanzee behavior and conservation, with extended time spent in their presence.

After your activity, return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Day 4
