11 Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking & Tanzania Wildlife Safari

Overview

This 11 Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking & Tanzania Wildlife Safari is a truly immersive East African journey that combines the best of Tanzania wildlife safaris with the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking in Uganda. From the iconic baobab-dotted plains of Tarangire to the endless savannahs of the Serengeti and the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, this safari offers exceptional game viewing across Tanzania’s Northern Circuit.

The adventure then continues into Uganda’s lush highlands, where you’ll trek through ancient rainforest in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to encounter endangered mountain gorillas up close. Along the way, enjoy cultural encounters with the Hadzabe tribe, scenic landscapes and diverse ecosystems that make this journey both exciting and deeply enriching.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha – Transfer to Tarangire National Park

Your safari begins in Arusha, where your driver-guide will meet you for a warm welcome and a short briefing about the adventure ahead. From here, you’ll set off on a scenic drive (approximately 2–3 hours) toward Tarangire National Park.

As you enter the park, the landscape immediately impresses with its iconic baobab trees and wide-open plains. Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, which gather around the Tarangire River—especially during the dry season. Your afternoon game drive offers your first chance to encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and possibly predators such as lions resting in the shade.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park, often near the river where wildlife activity is high. As the day winds down, continue exploring different sections of the park, with your guide interpreting animal behavior and helping you track wildlife movements.

Arrive at your lodge in the evening, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and listen to the distant sounds of the African bush.

Lake Manyara National Park – Forest, Wildlife & Birdlife

After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park (approximately 1.5–2 hours), a compact yet incredibly diverse park located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

Spend the day exploring its varied ecosystems—from dense groundwater forests to open grasslands and lakeshore areas. As you drive through the forest, you’ll likely encounter large troops of baboons, blue monkeys, and possibly elephants moving silently among the trees.

Lake Manyara is well known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior that makes this park unique. Keep your eyes on the branches of acacia trees where these lions are sometimes spotted resting.

Along the lake, you’ll see flamingos, pelicans, and other water birds feeding in the shallow waters, making it a fantastic destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Enjoy a full-day game drive with breaks for lunch and photography before heading to your lodge in the evening.

The drive is one of the most scenic in East Africa, offering views of rolling hills, Maasai villages, and the vast Ngorongoro Crater from above. You’ll stop at the crater rim for photos before continuing into the Serengeti.

As you descend into the plains, the landscape opens dramatically, revealing endless savannah dotted with wildlife. Even before reaching your lodge, your first Serengeti game drive begins, with chances to see wildebeests, zebras, antelope, and predators such as lions or cheetahs.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Day 4 & 5

Full-Day Game Drives in Serengeti – Big Five & Migration

These two days are dedicated to exploring the vast ecosystems of the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife safari destinations.

Each day begins early, when the park is at its most active. Morning game drives offer excellent opportunities to witness predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs hunting or returning from a night’s activity.

Throughout the day, you’ll traverse different habitats, including riverine forests, open plains, and rocky outcrops. The Serengeti is home to the Big Five, as well as hyenas, jackals, giraffes, elephants, and an incredible variety of birdlife.

Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, where thousands of animals move across the plains in search of water and fresh grazing. This spectacle often attracts predators, creating dramatic wildlife encounters.

Enjoy picnic lunches in the bush, allowing you to stay immersed in the wilderness all day. In the afternoon, continue exploring before returning to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day 6

Sunrise Game Drive & Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Begin your day with a sunrise game drive—one of the most rewarding times to observe wildlife in the Serengeti. The soft morning light provides excellent conditions for photography, and predators are often still active.

After breakfast or brunch, depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approximately 3–4 hours). Along the way, enjoy wildlife sightings and scenic views as the landscape transitions from plains to highlands.

Arrive at the crater rim in the afternoon, where you’ll be greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the caldera below. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the next day’s crater safari.

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater Safari & Transfer to Lake Eyasi

Descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day wildlife safari. This unique ecosystem supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

You’ll encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and possibly the rare black rhino. Visit Lake Magadi, where flamingos gather along the shores, and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by stunning scenery.

In the afternoon, transfer to Lake Eyasi (approximately 2–3 hours), a remote and culturally rich destination.

Afterward, return to Arusha for your flight to Uganda or Rwanda, marking the transition from Tanzania’s savannah landscapes to Uganda’s rainforest environment.

Day 9

Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Upon arrival, begin your journey to Bwindi (approximately 4–8 hours depending on route). The drive offers stunning views of terraced hills, rural villages, and lush vegetation.

Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon or evening and relax in preparation for the next day’s gorilla trekking experience.
