12 Day Best of Uganda Safari

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide, who will brief you about the journey ahead before transferring you to your hotel in Kampala.

After some time to relax and refresh, you’ll head out for a guided city tour that introduces you to Uganda’s culture, history, and daily life. Visit key landmarks such as the Kasubi Tombs, the Baháʼí Temple, and vibrant local markets where you can observe the rhythm of urban Ugandan life. Your guide will provide insightful commentary on the country’s heritage, traditions, and modern development.

This relaxed first day helps you ease into the safari while giving context to everything you’ll experience over the coming days.

After breakfast, begin your journey toward Murchison Falls National Park, a drive of approximately 4–5 hours through Uganda’s countryside. Along the way, you’ll pass rural villages, roadside markets, and open farmland, offering a glimpse into everyday life.

Your first major stop is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos. Accompanied by a ranger, you’ll take a guided walking safari to track white rhinos in their natural habitat. This experience is both educational and thrilling, as you get surprisingly close to these powerful animals.

After lunch in Masindi, continue to the park and proceed to the top of Murchison Falls. Here, you’ll witness the Nile River violently squeeze through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters below—an unforgettable natural spectacle with thunderous sound and mist rising into the air.

Begin your day with an early game drive across the northern savannah plains, one of the best wildlife areas in Uganda. The morning hours are ideal for spotting predators such as lions and leopards, as well as elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and various antelope species.

Your guide will track wildlife movements and position the vehicle for the best viewing and photography opportunities. The vast landscapes and golden morning light make this a truly memorable safari experience.

After returning to the lodge for lunch and relaxation, head out for an afternoon boat safari along the Victoria Nile. As you cruise upstream toward the base of the falls, you’ll encounter large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and an impressive variety of birds.

The highlight is reaching the base of Murchison Falls, where you’ll look up at the powerful cascade from below—an entirely different perspective from the top.

After breakfast, depart for Kibale Forest National Park, a journey of approximately 6–7 hours. This is one of the most scenic drives of the safari, taking you through changing landscapes—from savannah plains to lush tea plantations and forested hills.

You’ll pass through Fort Portal, a charming town set against the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains, with opportunities to stop for photos and refreshments.

Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your lodge nestled near the forest. Spend the evening relaxing, surrounded by the sounds of nature, preparing for the next day’s chimpanzee tracking.

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before your chimpanzee tracking experience.

Accompanied by experienced rangers, you’ll enter the dense rainforest in search of chimpanzees. The trek can take 2–4 hours, depending on their location. Once located, you’ll spend one hour observing them—watching their social interactions, grooming behavior, and playful movement through the trees.

The forest itself is rich in biodiversity, so expect to encounter other primates, birds, and unique plant species along the way.

In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community conservation project known for its birdlife and primates. The guided walk offers insight into local livelihoods and conservation efforts, making it both educational and rewarding.

After an early breakfast, depart Kibale Forest National Park and begin your scenic transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a drive of approximately 3–4 hours. This journey is incredibly rewarding, taking you through rolling hills, traditional villages, and crater lake regions, with occasional views of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains in the distance.

Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and a short rest before heading out for one of the park’s highlights—an afternoon boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway, connecting Lake Edward and Lake George, is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

As you cruise slowly along the channel, you’ll witness large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles basking along the shores, and herds of elephants and buffaloes coming down to drink. The experience is also a paradise for bird lovers, with sightings of African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, pelicans, and countless other water birds. The golden afternoon light makes this an excellent time for photography.

Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and relaxation, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Rise early for a sunrise game drive in the Kasenyi Plains, one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Early mornings offer excellent chances to spot predators such as lions and hyenas returning from the night’s hunt, as well as elephants, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, and warthogs grazing across the open savannah.

Your guide will carefully track wildlife movement, giving you the best opportunities for sightings and photography in the soft morning light.

After returning to the lodge for a late breakfast or early lunch, depart for the remote Ishasha sector, located in the southern part of the park. The drive takes you through varied landscapes, transitioning from open plains to more wooded savannah.

Ishasha is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare and fascinating behavior where lions rest high up in fig trees to escape heat and insects. Upon arrival, you may enjoy a short evening game drive in search of these unique predators, along with buffaloes, topis, and elephants.

After breakfast, depart Ishasha and continue your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a drive of approximately 2–4 hours depending on your lodge location. The road winds through the scenic Kigezi Highlands, offering breathtaking views of terraced hills, mist-covered valleys, and small rural communities.

Arrive in Bwindi in the afternoon and check in at your lodge, which is typically nestled on the edge of the forest, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.

If time allows, you may participate in a Batwa cultural experience, where you’ll learn about the traditions of the Batwa people—original forest dwellers who once lived in harmony with the jungle. This experience includes storytelling, demonstrations of traditional hunting techniques, and insights into their unique way of life.

Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a comprehensive briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and group size.

The trek into the dense rainforest can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding, but the journey itself is part of the adventure, with opportunities to spot birds, monkeys, and unique plant species along the way.

Once the gorillas are located, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour in their presence. Watch as they feed, groom, play, and interact within their family group. Observing a silverback up close or a mother caring for her infant is a deeply emotional and humbling experience that stays with you forever.

After the trek, return to the headquarters where you’ll receive your gorilla trekking certificate, then head back to the lodge for relaxation and a well-deserved rest.

After breakfast, transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, a scenic drive of approximately 2–3 hours through winding mountain roads.

Lake Bunyonyi, often referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes in East Africa, is surrounded by terraced hills and dotted with small islands. Upon arrival, check in and enjoy a relaxed afternoon in this peaceful setting.

You may choose to take a canoe ride across the lake, visit some of its historic islands, go birdwatching, or simply relax by the water. The calm atmosphere makes this the perfect place to unwind after the intensity of gorilla trekking.

After breakfast, depart Lake Bunyonyi and drive to Lake Mburo National Park, a journey of approximately 5–6 hours. Along the way, you’ll pass through scenic countryside and stop for lunch at a local restaurant or cultural center.

Arrive in the park in the afternoon and head out for a boat cruise on Lake Mburo, where you’ll see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species along the shoreline.

Later, enjoy an evening game drive, exploring the park’s rolling savannah and acacia woodlands. Lake Mburo is the best place in Uganda to see zebras and is also home to giraffes, impalas, elands, and buffaloes.

Start your final day with a guided walking safari, one of the most unique experiences in Lake Mburo National Park. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you’ll walk through the savannah, observing wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, and antelopes at close range while learning about tracks, plants, and animal behavior.

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Entebbe. En route, stop at the Uganda Equator, where you can take photos, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy a brief demonstration of the equatorial line.

Continue to Entebbe, arriving in time for your departure flight or drop-off at your hotel, marking the end of your incredible safari adventure.
