3 Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari
3 Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari
Overview
Step into the heart of Uganda’s tropical rainforest on this immersive 3 Day Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari in Kibale Forest National Park, widely known as the primate capital of Africa. This short yet enriching journey is designed for travelers seeking close encounters with wildlife, combining chimpanzee tracking, nature walks, cultural experiences and scenic exploration.
Home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 other primate species, Kibale Forest National Park offers one of the best chimpanzee trekking experiences in Africa. Beyond the forest, you’ll explore the beautiful crater lakes region around Fort Portal, visit tea plantations and discover the cultural heritage of the Tooro Kingdom—making this safari a perfect balance of wildlife, scenery and culture.
Tour Plan
Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park via Fort Portal & Crater Lakes
Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. After a short briefing, you’ll set off westward toward Kibale Forest National Park, a journey of approximately 5 to 6 hours.
The drive is scenic and varied, taking you through Uganda’s countryside dotted with traditional homesteads, roadside markets, and rolling hills. As you approach western Uganda, the landscape becomes greener and more dramatic, with expansive tea plantations and distant views of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Upon arrival in Fort Portal, enjoy a relaxed town visit. You may explore the historic Tooro Kingdom Palace, offering insight into the region’s royal heritage, and continue to the fascinating Nyakasura Caves, known for their cultural legends linked to the ancient Bachwezi dynasty.
If time allows, take a short excursion to the nearby crater lakes—beautiful water bodies surrounded by lush hills, perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
Later, proceed to your lodge near Kibale Forest, check in, and unwind in the tranquil forest environment.
Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Nature Walk
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a pre-trek briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
Morning: Chimpanzee Tracking Experience
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you’ll venture into the dense rainforest in search of wild chimpanzees. The trek typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees were last seen.
As you walk through the forest, your guide will help you interpret the environment—pointing out feeding remains, nests, and calls that indicate the chimps’ location. You may also encounter other primates such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, along with colorful forest birds and butterflies.
Once you locate the chimpanzees, you will spend one full hour with them, observing their fascinating behavior. Watch as they communicate through loud calls, groom each other, forage for food, and move energetically through the canopy. The experience is dynamic, engaging, and often fast-paced—quite different from gorilla trekking, making it equally exciting.
Return to your lodge for lunch and some time to relax.
Afternoon: Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk
In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run conservation area rich in biodiversity. This guided nature walk takes you through papyrus swamps and forest edges, offering excellent opportunities to spot monkeys, birds, and unique plant species.
The walk also provides a meaningful cultural connection, as you engage with local guides and learn how tourism supports community development and conservation.
Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and relaxation.
Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, a drive of approximately 5 to 6 hours.
Enjoy the final views of western Uganda’s landscapes as you pass through tea plantations, small towns, and rural countryside. You’ll stop for lunch along the way and have opportunities to stretch, take photos, or pick up local crafts.
Arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, where your guide will drop you off at your hotel or at Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight.
