Tour Plan
Transfer from Kigali to Gisenyi – Relaxation at Lake Kivu
Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport, followed by a scenic drive of approximately 3 to 4 hours to Gisenyi, located on the northern shores of Lake Kivu.
As you journey through Rwanda’s countryside, enjoy views of rolling hills, rural villages, and lush green landscapes. Along the way, you may stop near Musanze for a brief cultural visit or refreshments.
Arrive in Gisenyi in time for lunch and check in at your lakeside lodge. In the afternoon, you have the option to take a boat cruise on Lake Kivu, relax by the water, or enjoy a quiet walk along the shoreline.
This relaxed start allows you to unwind and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Nyiragongo Volcano Hike – Summit & Overnight Experience
After an early breakfast, cross the border into Congo via Goma and proceed to the headquarters of Virunga National Park for a briefing by park rangers.
You will then transfer to Kibati, the starting point for your Nyiragongo volcano hike, and begin the ascent at around mid-morning.
The hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on your pace. The trail passes through dense forest at lower elevations before transitioning into rugged volcanic terrain as you climb higher.
Although the hike can be physically demanding, it is guided and paced with regular breaks. As you approach the summit at 3,470 meters (11,380 feet), the landscape becomes more dramatic, with expansive views of the surrounding region.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the active lava lake, one of the most impressive natural phenomena in the world. As night falls, the glowing lava creates an unforgettable atmosphere.
You will spend the night in simple but secure summit cabins, enjoying dinner and the unique experience of sleeping on an active volcano.
Descend Nyiragongo & Transfer to Mikeno Lodge
Wake up early to enjoy a stunning sunrise over the Virunga landscape and take in the final views of the lava lake.
After breakfast, begin your descent back to Kibati, which typically takes 3 to 4 hours. The descent is easier than the ascent but still requires careful footing on the volcanic trails.
At the base, you will meet your driver and transfer to Mikeno Lodge (approximately 1 to 2 hours), located within the forested foothills of Virunga National Park.
Arrive at the lodge in the afternoon and take time to relax after the hike. Surrounded by lush forest and views of the Virunga Mountains, Mikeno Lodge offers a peaceful and comfortable setting.
Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bukima ranger station for your gorilla trekking briefing, usually starting around 7:00–8:00 AM. You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and guided into the forest by experienced trackers.
The gorilla trekking experience in Virunga National Park can take between 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. The terrain varies from forest trails to steeper slopes, but the trek is guided and manageable.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour in their presence, observing them at close range. Watch as they feed, groom, and interact naturally within their family groups—a deeply moving and unforgettable wildlife encounter.
After the trek, return to the starting point and transfer back to your lodge or Goma for relaxation and dinner.
Return to Kigali – End of Safari
After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Kigali. Drive back to Goma and proceed to the border for exit formalities before re-entering Rwanda.
Once across, continue your scenic drive to Kigali (approximately 4 to 5 hours), with optional stops for photos, refreshments, or souvenir shopping.
Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, where your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your onward travel.
