Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trek in DR Congo

3 Day Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trek in DR Congo

Overview

This 3 Day Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trek in DR Congo is a rare and rewarding primate safari that takes you deep into the lush rainforests of Kahuzi-Biega National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last strongholds of the endangered Eastern Lowland gorilla (Grauer’s gorilla).

Unlike mountain gorillas found in higher altitudes, these impressive primates inhabit the lowland forests and are known for their larger size and calmer demeanor. This safari offers a unique opportunity to experience gorilla trekking in Congo in a quieter, less crowded setting, surrounded by rich biodiversity and dramatic landscapes.

Starting and ending in Kigali, this short yet immersive journey combines scenic drives, cross-border travel and an unforgettable wildlife encounter—perfect for adventurous travelers and primate enthusiasts seeking something off the beaten path.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Transfer from Kigali to Bukavu – Scenic Drive via Lake Kivu

Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport, followed by a short briefing from your driver-guide. You will then set off on a scenic drive toward southwestern Rwanda, heading to the Rusizi (Cyangugu) border.

The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, offering stunning views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmland, and tea plantations. As you approach the western region, you’ll begin to see the beautiful shoreline of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes.

After completing border formalities, you will cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo and continue to Bukavu, a charming lakeside town that serves as the gateway to Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

Arrive in the afternoon, check in at your lodge, and take time to relax. You may enjoy views of Lake Kivu or take a short walk around the property as you prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2

Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced rangers. You will learn about Eastern Lowland gorilla behavior, trekking guidelines, and conservation efforts before being assigned to a habituated gorilla family.

Your gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega National Park begins as you enter the dense lowland rainforest with your guide and trackers. The trek typically takes 1 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas.

The terrain here is generally less steep than mountain gorilla trekking, but the forest can be thick and humid, offering a true jungle experience. Along the way, your guide will point out unique plant species, birdlife, and signs of other wildlife.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one full hour in their presence, observing their natural behavior up close. Eastern Lowland gorillas are the largest of all gorilla subspecies, and watching them move, feed, and interact within their family groups is both powerful and humbling.

After the trek, return to Bukavu for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. This is a great time to reflect on your experience, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, or take in views of the lake.
