Tour Plan

Day 1

Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your Rwanda safari begins with a warm welcome from your professional driver-guide upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing, you will set off on a scenic drive north toward Volcanoes National Park.

The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and offers a captivating introduction to Rwanda’s landscape. As you travel through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and rural villages, you’ll quickly understand why Rwanda is known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The road is smooth and the views are consistently beautiful, making the transfer both comfortable and enjoyable.

Depending on your arrival time, you may include a brief Kigali city tour before departure or on your return. Highlights may include local markets or the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Upon arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and relax in the cool mountain air. Enjoy dinner while taking in views of the Virunga Volcanoes in the distance.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – A Life-Changing Experience

Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for registration and a detailed briefing by park rangers. You will be assigned to a specific gorilla family and grouped with a small number of trekkers (maximum of 8 participants).

Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. The terrain can be steep and muddy, but your guides will ensure a safe and steady pace while sharing insights about the ecosystem.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch silverbacks assert their presence, juveniles play, and mothers nurture their young. This close encounter is both humbling and deeply emotional—one of the most powerful wildlife experiences in Africa.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you may opt for a cultural visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can learn about traditional Rwandan life through music, dance, and storytelling.

Golden Monkey Tracking & Scenic Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga region and are known for their vibrant golden-orange fur and energetic behavior. The tracking experience typically takes 2 to 3 hours and is less physically demanding than gorilla trekking. You will explore bamboo forest zones while observing these playful primates as they leap through branches and interact in groups.

After the trek, begin your scenic drive south to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and is filled with stunning views of Rwanda’s countryside, including tea plantations, rolling hills, and rural communities.

Arrive in the late afternoon, check in at your lodge, and relax after the day’s activities.

Nyungwe is home to over 500 chimpanzees as well as more than 13 other primate species, making it one of the most important primate habitats in Africa. As you trek through the dense rainforest, you will listen for the distinctive calls of chimpanzees before spotting them moving through the canopy or foraging on the forest floor.

Once located, you will observe their lively and social behavior—feeding, grooming, and interacting within their groups. Their energetic movements and vocal communication make this a dynamic and exciting wildlife encounter.

After the trek, return to your lodge for relaxation. In the afternoon, you may opt for a guided nature walk or simply enjoy the tranquil forest surroundings.
