3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Golden Monkey Safari
3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Golden Monkey Safari
Overview
This 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Golden Monkey Safari is a short yet remarkably rich primate adventure, perfect for travelers seeking an immersive wildlife experience within a limited timeframe. Set in the breathtaking landscapes of Volcanoes National Park, this itinerary combines two of Rwanda’s most iconic activities—gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking—into one seamless journey.
Over the course of three days, you will explore the lush slopes of the Virunga Mountains, encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat and observe the playful golden monkeys in bamboo forests. Starting and ending in Kigali, this safari offers both convenience and depth, making it ideal as a standalone getaway or as part of a broader East African wildlife safari.
Tour Plan
Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide, followed by a short safari briefing. You will then begin your scenic journey north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and offers a captivating introduction to Rwanda’s famed “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Along the way, you will pass rolling green hills, terraced farms, and traditional villages, with plenty of opportunities to appreciate the country’s natural beauty and rural charm.
Depending on your arrival time, a brief Kigali city tour can be arranged before departure or on return. This may include a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial or local craft markets.
Upon arrival in Musanze, you will check in at your lodge and have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. You may choose to relax, enjoy the cool mountain air, or take an optional guided walk to nearby communities. As evening falls, enjoy dinner with views of the Virunga volcanoes in the distance.
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for registration and a detailed briefing by park rangers. You will be introduced to gorilla trekking guidelines, conservation efforts, and safety procedures.
You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families and grouped with a small number of trekkers (maximum of 8 participants). Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains.
The trek can take between 1 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding at times, but the journey is well guided and paced to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as silverbacks assert their presence, juveniles play energetically, and mothers care for their young. This close encounter is both powerful and deeply humbling—one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in the world.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a late lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you may opt for a cultural visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where local communities share traditional music, dance, and stories that reflect Rwanda’s rich heritage.
Golden Monkey Tracking & Return to Kigali
After breakfast, return to the park headquarters for your second primate experience—golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park.
Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga region and are known for their vibrant golden-orange fur and lively behavior. The tracking experience typically takes 2 to 3 hours and is less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, making it a relaxed yet equally rewarding activity.
As you move through the bamboo forest, you will observe these agile primates leaping between branches, feeding, and interacting in groups. Their playful nature and photogenic appearance make this experience especially enjoyable for photographers and nature lovers.
After the tracking experience, you will begin your return journey to Kigali, arriving in the early to mid-afternoon. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for a short city visit, shopping, or a relaxing coffee stop.
Your guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 3-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari.
